Sacred stone in Machu Picchu damaged during beer commercial
What are they doing filming a beer commercial at Machu Picchu? Would they go make a beer commercial at the Vatican? The Taj Mahal? The holy dome in Jerusalem? Mecca? Is nothing sacred? Have we sunk so low that we have forgotten our spiritual heritage and worship only the god of money and commercialism?

LIMA, Peru -- A massive crane being used to help
film a beer commercial toppled over damaging a stone
sundial in Peru's famed Inca ruins of Machu Picchu,
officials said.
The Intihuatana, or "hitching post for the sun,"
is a granite block carved into the peak of the mountain
where Machu Picchu lies, high in the jungle-covered Andes,
about 310 miles (500 kilometers) southeast of the capital,

A jutting edge of the sundial the length of a ballpoint
pen was chipped off Friday when a 1,000-pound
(450-kilogram) crane being used to film the commercial
fell over.
"Machu Picchu is the heart of our
archaeological heritage and the Intihuatana is the
heart of Machu Picchu. They've struck at our most
sacred inheritance," Federico Kaufmann Doig, a
prestigious Peruvian archaeologist, said Monday.
The Intihuatana was used by Inca astronomers to predict
solstices and was of great importance in Inca mythology
and agriculture.
It is considered to be the most important shrine in Machu
Picchu, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of
foreign tourists each year.
The commercial was being shot by the U.S. publicity firm
J. Walter Thompson for beer company Cervesur, a subsidiary
of Peru's largest beer company Backus and Johnston.
"Although we do not feel responsible for this
regrettable event, we are committed to help clear up what
happened," said Cervesur regional manager
Carlos de la Flor in a telephone interview with the
Associated Press.
He said the company was ready to help the INC repair the
damage, a precedure that experts said would require
advanced restoration techniques.
The Cuzco office of Peru's National Institute of Culture
blamed the film production company hired by J. Walter
Thompson for damage to the 500-year-old ruins, a UNESCO
World Heritage site.
Gustavo Manrique, Cuzco's INC director, said that the
permit specified only light equipment could be used.
Manrique said the production crew had sneaked the crane
into the sanctuary at dawn after the INC had prohibited
its use.
He said criminal charges for destruction of national
patrimony had been filed against the production company.
The charges carry a sentence of two to four years in
prison.

Lessons Learned
There are times in our lives that we
must be alone... it is those times that we must look
within for strength and understanding. If we can not
stand on our own... then everyone and everything
else in life becomes a crutch for us...
I also believe there is a time for sharing... and in that
there too, is growth!
It is these times alone, we can grow by leaps and bounds
or choose to stay and play in self-pity... It is
these times we learn to know and love ones self. You
can not love another, if you do not first love yourself.
Every once in a while we need a little thump on the head
to remind us of that which we already know... Then
it comes down to practicing that which we know... I also
learned some things that appear before our eyes may not be
what is really going on... but an illusion, and when we
focus on that part, we forget to look beyond for those
things that are real!
A lesson learned!! Thanks to a wonderful teacher!!
