What could happen in your life if...

A new year is upon us. Are you excited about the possibilities it brings? While making your New Year "resolutions," how about giving this idea some thought. It could change your life!

What are your first thoughts when you open your eyes in the morning?  How do you feel about the day unfolding before you? What song of life does your spirit sing as you prepare for the day ahead?  Everything in the universe, including the earth, the sun, the moon, and you had a beginning!  One of our most important beginnings can be the start of each new day in the new year ahead.  How we begin our day can set the tone for our experiences from that point forward.

We can feel the joy of spirit and give thanks.  We can listen to the still, small voice within and open our hearts to unlimited love.  The excitement and enthusiasm for the work before us to do each day can stimulate fruitful productivity.  We can cultivate a positive mental perception of life.  Appreciation, gratitude, and the sheer joy of living can shine from our eyes and radiate as powerful life energy flowing through us.  We can perceive situations, circumstances, and people around us in a new light and larger perspective.

Can you imagine how your day could progress when inspired with this level of awareness and these attitudes?  Often a person's success of failure, happiness or misery, may be a matter of individual perspective.  Does your mind represent a sanctuary of ideas, joy, and peace?  Do you understand your own physical and spiritual nature as a preparation to work successfully with your mind?  Is the light of increasing wisdom and intelligence reflected in your words, your actions, and the love you give forth to others? When you choose to live each day as a new beginning, do you become excited about what you are going to write in your "book of life" for that day?

What could happen in your life if, for the upcoming year, you would choose to live each day as a new beginning and allow the glory of spirit to manifest through you throughout the day?  The week?  The month?  The whole year?  Go for it!
Happy New Year!

Notes & Thoughts By W. G. Black Ph.D. - Founder of Gakati'yi

Wishes for a Happy New Year

With Infinite Gratitude for All That Is Past, with Infinite Service to All That Is Present, with Infinite Responsibility to All That Is Future, We Focus Now on the Creation of All That Is... Generating the Best Possible New Year!  [Dr. Black's New Year version of the Buddha's 'Gestalt Prayer.'] What we focus on expands! There is an idea that it's important what we do on New Year's Eve because whatever we are doing and whatever we are attending to during that time influences and predisposes what the new year will be like.   So, let us have thoughts of love, what the Course in Miracles calls "the thoughts of God," on New Year's Eve. Let us be with people we want to be with all year long, playing, working, healing, creating new realities which will become permanent and joyful memories of the Soul. Buddha, in the famous statement just quoted, holds us collectively responsible for our collective future. We have just been through lessons about the importance of one vote and the whole process of voting and being counted. The results of the census indicates that there are more of us than ten years ago. What collective memories do we desire? It appears we have enough gloomers and doomers already. How about being a boomer and a zoomer? Focus on love, joy, peace, creativity and healing. If enough of us do enough of it, they will boom, zoom and expand!

One way to create a positive future is to focus on love in the present.  My beautiful mentor, Stacey D. Mills, once said in her quiet, wise way, "You know, actually, each new moment is an opportunity to move into present time." Her message has been so "timely;" it has remained with me and helped me for so many years. The idea in her message is especially valuable and uplifting for anyone who is "stuck in the past." Staying stuck in the past can make a "Bad New Year." Phil Laut offers a great affirmation for releasing the past and moving into present time. It's a very challenging affirmation unless you are a fully realized master already. Are you ready? OK. Here it is. "I am grateful for every experience I ever had." That's  not so difficult or profound, you say. Oh, really? This affirmation has the power to find every bit of judgment we are holding toward Self or Other or the World with reference to the past. Observe and see if you have a judgment free consciousness toward your past experiences. See if you don't think one was good and another was bad. I suspect that Al Gore is still feeling that the experience of winning would have been "better."

Buddha's statement guides us to another way to create a positive future: rendering service in the present. Love gives because that is its nature and it cannot do or be otherwise. The ego gives in order to get. Let the New Year be one of rendering loving service to others. Make new choices during this period. Choose to give more, to someone different or unexpected. Shake up the patterns, and serve.

On Thursday evening, December 28, I was honored to be with Dehbra Taylor of Phoenix in her experiential training, spiritual development group. The topic for the evening was numerology. We calculated our birth years, and she told us the issues and areas of growth based on our numbers. I added October 12 to 2001, and I equaled "6." My growth is focused on relationships, all kinds. I am exploring relationship to Self, parts of Self to parts of Self, Self to Others, Self to Things, Self to the System, etc. One way to create a Happy New Year is to understand the curriculum, the learning goals and to know who the teachers are and then be "grateful for all opportunities and all lessons learned." Dehbra said that this year, 2001, in general is a "3" year, and it will be focused in general for everyone on 'nurturing.' "All ways therefore, whatsoever you would like to be nurtured by others, nurture unto them." Assuming that you have permission to nurture and to be nurtured, you will have a "Happy Nurturing Year." May the best unfold for you and all you hold dear, in this the first year, of a whole new millennium, transform your fear. (We request and welcome your responses to Notes & Thoughts. email:

Natural Approaches to Combating Colds and the Flu

Well, yesterday, Dec. 31, 2000, we were blessed with two feet of beautiful, powdery snow here in blizzard-swept New Jersey. Unfortunately, along with its beauty and sleigh-riding fun, snow and chilly temperatures often bring many cases of colds and the flu. Below are some helpful remedies, that I have come across while working in the local health food store for the past six years and as a scientist for the past twenty years. These natural products may help you combat the pesky bugs, should you find yourself or your loved ones coming down with the winter blahs. Most of the products may be found at your local health food store.

Prevention  Keeping yourself de-stressed during the holiday season is a challenge for many of us, but through prayer (sending positive thoughts and intentions out), and through meditation (clearing the mind of distracting thoughts, so that inner messages can be received), I find it easier to achieve inner peace and emotional calm. So, through prayer and meditation, (and marking things OFF my to-do list, instead of adding things to it), I  keep my immune system functioning properly, so that my body can properly defend itself against any bugs which may come my way.

To help keep my immune system in tip-top condition from a physical point of view, I take a product called Transfer Factor by 4-Life Research.

Research indicates that the first time a mother breastfeeds her infant, her whole immune system memory is transferred to the child through a clear fluid called colostrum Out of the colostrum, the effective memory molecule, called transfer factor, was purified by 4-Life Research. When taken orally, it has proven to boost the immune system by approximately 103% !

Personally, I was down with the flu a few years ago. I was lying flat on my back and achy for 5 days. I had planned a dinner date with my friend and was planning to cook a nice dinner for him, when I cancelled. He came over anyway, bringing with him a bottle of Transfer Factor. He gave me five capsules and I was happily preparing dinner about 1 hour later.

Another product by 4-Life Research is Transfer Factor Plus. It contains transfer factor, as well as a combination of other powerful immune boosting components such as IP6, Beta Glucans, Aloe Vera, and a proprietary blend of glyconutrients, which enhance the innate immune system and increase NK cell activity over baseline by 248%. It can be used in conditions where the immune system is severely compromised. Please e-mail me at dawnawolfe@yahoo for more information.

Viruses  The flu, (short for influenza), is caused by a group of tiny viruses which divide, adapt, change and mutate quickly inside the human body in order to survive. That is why a new version of the “flu shot” is developed each year. I prefer natural remedies to injecting foreign substances into my body, therefore, again, my number-one remedy against colds and the flu is prevention.

However, try as we may, many of us still get caught by the little critters. And standard allopathic medicine does not offer many ways to directly combat viruses. It is well-known that antibiotics only fight bacterial infections…not viruses. When you find yourself feeling aching, dizzy, feverish and have a runny nose, what are the first products to try?

If you catch the flu early enough, and you think it is definitely a virus, you may want to try the homeopathic remedy, Occillococcinum , which comes in four vials and must be taken early-on in the symptomology, with strict compliance to timing and dosages. It has no side effects and is gentle and mild. My personal experience with it has been good, however, again, it must be taken early. The tiny lactose/slightly sweetened homeopathic pellets are loved by children and not difficult to convince them to take.

Black Elderberry extract (which comes in lozenges and syrup) was developed by a virologist in Israel and clinically tested to prove its anti-viral capabilities. It is sold under the name of Sambucolâ. When taken as directed, I have found it to be extremely powerful and effective against viruses of many types.

The amino acid, lysine, is highly effective against viruses, as it inhibits viral replication. It is especially effective against oral cold sores caused by the herpes virus.

When taken orally in a high dosages such as 2000-3000 mgs. for a couple of days, it often completely rids one of mouth sores. If the above dosage is taken at the first sign of a cold sore, (when you first feel heat and throbbing at the site), the lysine will prevent the cold sore from forming altogether. I would combine this with relaxation techniques or the Bach Flower Essence, Rescue Remedy, (calming and centering, taken a few drops under the tongue), as the cause of the virus is usually stress-related. Conditions causing cold sores are usually over-exposure to heat (sunburn or wind damage), over-exposure to cold temperatures, or stressful events such as weddings, funerals, holidays, and general emotional trauma. I always take lysine at the first feeling of coming down with any virus, in combination with a multivitamin, vitamin C, proper rest, and lots of fluids.

Colds  The common cold is frequently caused by bacterial infection of some sort. Although allopathic medicine is strong in effectively implementing antibiotics in severe cases of bacterial infection, sometimes a natural approach is effective, without stripping the body of its natural bacterial flora in the gut, and going through several experimental courses of antibiotics.

The herb, Goldenseal, (Hydrastis Canadensis) has strong anti-bacterial properties, and when used at high enough dosages, can kill even the strongest infections. I like combine it with Echinacea, equal dosages of 300mg, 3x/day. (Do not take Goldenseal when pregnant). A combination of Fenugreek and Thyme call Fenuthyme by Nature’s Way, is great for breaking up lung and chest congestion. 2-3, 2-3 x/day is recommended.

Colloidal Silver, 50ppm,(Innovative Natural Products) is an excellent anti-bacterial and can be used both externally or internally (the clear, tasteless liquid can be added to juices for the elderly or children) against infections.

Again, Black Elderberry extract is great and fine in combination with the above herbs and may be good in cases where a combination bacterial and viral state exist.

Homeopathics such as Mercuris Vivus, 30C can be used for  reddened right-sided sore throats, Hepar Sulph. Calc. 30C for coughs with runny noses, Belladonna, 30C, for fevers and inflammation, Gelsemium, 30C for a headache accompanying the flu, Antimonium Tart, 30C for coughs accompanied by mucous in the chest, and Phosporus, 30C, for general sore throats. Please note that in order for the homoeopathic remedy to work, patient symptoms must match the remedy exactly. Children love taking the pellets, which is an added bonus for parents.

Finally, I love the Herbal Cough syrups containing wild cherry bark and the Homeopathic Cough syrup for children and adults by Fenuthyme and Tafel (B &T) for breaking up chest congestion, whether caused by colds, flu, pneumonia or post-operative conditions.

Hopefully everyone will have a Happy, Healthy New Year!!!

Remembrances -BonnieJ.Ryan

In the spirit of Gakati'yi, here is one of my favorite quotations -- from the inauguration speech of Nelson Mandela -- a man who became one of the greatest leaders of our time after being imprisoned for 27 years.  I will never forget standing in the cell on Robbin Island where he spent 18 of those 27 years and trying to imagine how a person could come through that ordeal and radiate such love and compassion for the world....

From the Inauguration Address of Nelson Mandela, 1994--

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous.  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone, and as we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

God neither punishes nor rewards.  ...In the long run, no one judges us but ourselves and no one condemns us but ourselves.   ....We are our own reward and our own punishment.  --Ernest Holmes  The Science of Mind

The Jar

A man placed two identical jars on the table. "Don't look at the outward appearance, but look at the heart. These jars came from the same factory, were made of the same materials, and can hold the same amount. But they are different," he explained.
Then he upset one and it oozed out honey. He turned over the other, and vinegar spilled out. "When a jar is upset, whatever is in it comes out.
Until the jars were upset, they looked alike.
The difference lay within, and could not be seen. When they were upset, their contents were revealed. Until we are upset we put on a good front.
But when we are upset, we reveal our innermost thoughts and attitudes, for "out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks".
What if someone tipped you over today?  What would flow out?  Would you reveal the "honey" of grace and patience, or the "vinegar" of anger and sarcasm?
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love bridges the gap between all worlds, contradictions and paradoxes". Create a terrific day knowing that the one who upsets you may be just looking for some honey.

Until we awake to the fact that we are One in nature with God, we shall not find the way of life.  Until we realize that our own word has the power of life, we will not see clearly.  --Ernest Holmes  The Science of Mind
