"The Legend of Gakati'yi, "The Place of Being Set Free."
We've had another major election. Millions have exercise
their freedom by voting during the week that these
thoughts are visible on one of our most powerful
modern symbols of the freedom of humanity, the
Internet. I propose a toast and a celebration
of the history and current status of freedom on
Earth by reviewing the Legend of Gakati'yi, "The
Place of Being Set Free."
The Creator blessed me with the story of Gakati'yi in the
last part of the 1960's. I received a brochure from
northern Georgia which told the story. I read
it. I was deeply moved, put it aside but could not
resist returning to it now and then. I was deeply
impressed with how much the Legend embodied so much of the
essence of our human condition. Eventually it became the
name and the symbolic message bearer for our non-profit
organization.
It was sometime between 1730 and 1750, close to Bryson
City, North Carolina. The Cherokees and the
Caucasians had a battle. The Cherokees took
prisoners and held them, but they soon released them for
humanitarian rather than military reasons. They
released them on the banks of the beautiful Tuckaseegee
River, and, as is the custom of Native Americans, they
named the place on the riverbank where this event occurred
to denote what happened there. They decided that
this place on Sacred Mother Earth would be known as,
"Gakati'yi," a Cherokee word which means,
"the place of being set free."
Sequoyah is among the best known of all Cherokees.
He was a lawyer and had a physical disability. He is
remembered most for increasing his people's freedom and
consciousness through language, through the famous
Cherokee alphabet which he created. The Cherokees
are remembered most as a nation for their inspiring
response to the efforts to destroy them by the government
of the United States of America. The Trail of Tears
was made legendary by the Cherokees as they were forced to
move to Oklahoma and "start over," assuming that
anything or anyone remained after the devastation by law
of the Cherokee Nation, the taking of their lands and the
total disenfranchisement. I have been told that the
Cherokees never "cashed the check," therefore,
the original lands and the original agreements of the
Cherokees have been in effect at the "highest level
of the law" through all of these years, rather than
the ones which have been enacted at the practical,
everyday level. Today, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the
beautiful Trail of Tears Museum commemorates this tragic
time in our history.
The Legend of Gakati'yi emerged from physical events on
the physical plane, composed of things involving land,
water, bodies, imprisonment and, finally, freedom at the
physical level. As with the parables of Jesus, there is
great power to portray concerns of the emotional, mental
and spiritual planes. We humans on this Earth in
physical bodies are imprisoned in our fears. (False
Evidence Appearing Real, i.e., Illusions) Our work is the
transformation of our fears. The ancient phrase,
"frozen with fear," has great meaning as a way
of helping us to understand our situations and our
dilemmas. Countless systems have been generated and
devised to identify our fears and help us to confront
them, deal with them and thus transform them.
The purpose of the Gakati'yi Foundation is to assist
people in "setting themselves free" (from their
fears) and thereby to move to states of enlightenment,
bliss, joy and new freedoms. Is it not a paradox that fear
gains power through being ignored and/or resisted? I
remember so well the workshop in Gestalt Therapy with Dr.
Jim Simkin in 1970 in Austin, Texas, at the Laos House
close to the University of Texas (and, shall I mention at
this election time, the Governor's Mansion?). Dr. Simkin
taught responsibility and transformation of fear by having
us ask the question, "How am I scaring myself"?
Then, the follow up work could be made in the following
statement: "I am scaring myself by..." By
staying with this process long enough, it is possible to
find the love beneath the fear, transform the fear, and
permanent change occurs.
There are many predictions that we are entering some scary
times on our planet as deep fears surface and will be
enacted upon the Great Universal Drama Stage known as
"Terra," or, Planet Earth. Jesus said to his
disciples numerous times, "Fear not," which I
interpret as "transform through awareness,
understanding and wisdom." Let us join together in
setting ourselves free and assisting others to do
likewise. There is always an emphasis on the importance of
one vote in an election. Let us also emphasize the
importance of transforming a single fear. The
Legendary Legacy of Gakati'yi will reduce our fears
through transformation and help us all move toward peace
on Earth.

The Law of the Lamp

Almost everyone is familiar with the story of Aladdin and
his wonderful lamp. A marvelous genie, who eagerly
awaited Aladdin's bidding, lived in the lamp. Yet,
in the fable, the genie didn't simply appear whenever
Aladdin wished. Aladdin had to do something to
invoke the genie's presence. He had to rub the lamp.
When Aladdin took the necessary steps for putting into
action the proper process for something to happen, his
good appeared. This same activity is true for each of us!
We can begin now to use the attributes we already possess,
whether they are talents and abilities, material
possessions now owned, or fantastic opportunities for
service to ourself and to others. We can do the most we
know how to do with what we have to do with!
Take one step at a time; and begin by taking the step
immediately ahead of you. Rub your lamp! Clear the
way in your consciousness and in your life for the
abundant good you earnestly desire. It's amazing
that when we peruse the miraculous demonstrations of
prosperity recounted in the Old and New Testaments, we
recognize that simple, everyday things are used. For
example, David slew the giant with a small pebble hurled
from a slingshot! Elijah called forth great
abundance to meet a widow's daily needs by using the small
amount of oil she had available! Jacob obtained a
superb dower from his father-in-law, Laban, by
intelligently using some spotted willow sticks! Joseph
mastered his dungen in Egypt and became an
"overnight" success as second in command to
Pharoah. Jesus broke five loaves and two fishes and
fed a multitude of five thousand persons. Get the idea!
All these people had one thing in common.
They proved that any picture held firmly in mind must come
forth as a tangible result in its own way and in its own
time.
