A Course in Miracles has a section in the Workbook for Students devoted to
"attack thoughts." It seems appropriate that we ponder this matter as the
"new" President of the United States will be moving toward an upsurge in
military preparation, strategy and spending.
(We request and welcome your responses to Notes & Thoughts. email: gakatiyi@hotmail.com) We are pleased to introduce Donna McGrath. Donna is a licensed Medical Technologist, having a Master's Degree in Chemistry, and worked as a Molecular Biologist at the NIH. Donna will provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information on better health! We welcome her and her expertise! Healthful HintsBy Donna McGrath, M.T. (ASCP), M.S., D.D. Traditional versus Alternative Treatment Options for Anxiety: The Fear Response Anxiety is defined as an unpleasant emotional state ranging from mild uneasiness to intense fear. It is most often accompanied by a variety of symptoms, most which of relate to the chest area. These symptoms include heart palpitations, tightening of the chest with the feeling of the inability to take in enough air, throbbing or stabbing pains, and a tendency to sigh or hyperventilate. This can lead to a numb or tingling feeling in the arms and legs, can cause muscular tension in the neck and back and can lead to muscle spasms. Other symptoms of anxiety can include excessive sweating, dizziness, excessive mouth dryness, fainting, and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Severe anxiety can lead to “panic attacks” which are intense feelings of fear. These attacks are often accompanied with agoraphobia, which is the fear of being in public places. As a result, most people with agoraphobia become housebound. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry, about 15% of the total American population suffers from some form of severe anxiety which may or may not lead to panic attacks. Modern Medical Approach Since modern medicine’s standard medical approach is based primarily on focusing on the physical body and sometimes the mental body, let us start there. When most people go to a medical doctor or psychiatrist to get assistance for anxiety, they usually are pre-scribed a benzodiazapine class of drug, which is a tranquilizer. Examples of these drugs are Klonopin, Halicon, Librium, Ativan, Centrax, Xanax, Dalmane, Paxipam, Restoril, Serax or Tranxene. Benzodiazapine drugs work by enhancing the nerve transmitter, GABA (gamma amino butyric acid), which in turn blocks the arousal of brain centers. Benzodiazpines induce sleep, are addictive, and cause many side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired coordination. Other possible side effects include headache, blurred vision, and a “hangover” lethargic effect. The most serious side effects include effects on memory and behavior such as amnesia, confusion, nervousness, extreme irritability, anxiety and aggressiveness. Should you decide to stop taking these drugs, work with your physician to gradually taper off. Side effects similar to all of the above symptoms can be expected as you gradually ween off these drugs. Quite frankly, I don’t know how a physician could prescribe a drug to counteract anxiety, which actually produces anxiety as a side effect. This doesn’t seem to make much sense to me. Causes...Body, Mind and Spirit In my opinion, the cause of any disease, or uneasiness as related to the body can be directly linked to problems related to the physical body, emotional body, the mental body, and/or the spiritual body. As these four elements of the physical body function as one, then it follows that the healing of the body can be done on any of these levels. In fact, I have found that the most effective, rapid and complete healing is accomplished when combined healing methodologies are focused on all four levels. The cause of anxiety as described by the medical and scientific communities is a defect in metabolism referred to as a “biochemical imbalance”. The most noted imbalance biochemically in patients with anxiety and panic attacks is an increased blood lactate or lactic acid level. Lactate is the final breakdown product of sugar metabolism when there is lack of oxygen in the system. A common example of lactic acid build-up is muscle sore-ness in athletes after an intense workout. How does this relate to anxiety and panic attacks? Experiments have been done which demonstrate that patients with panic attacks have increased lactate levels. In one study, patients with panic attacks in progress were injected with lactate, which was found to profoundly worsen the attack. (Glad I wasn’t a patient in that study!). Reducing the blood lactate level is then important in treatment of anxiety. Natural Approaches to Healing The Body According to Melvyn Werbach, M.D., six nutritional factors lead to increased blood lactate levels. These are: · Alcohol consumption · Caffeine intake · Sugar intake · Deficiency of B vitamins · Deficiency of Calcium and Magnesium · Food Allergies By simply avoiding the first three items on the list, one can go a long way to relieving anxiety symptoms. A study group, which simply eliminated coffee from their diets, found 70 % improvement in their symptoms after only one week. Mild exercise such as swimming, walking, stretching, or yoga can also calm the body and help to alleviate attacks. Gentle aromatherapy massage with clary sage, ylang ylang, and lavender or warm/hot jacuzzi bath with a drop or each of the above oils is very relaxing. Omega-3 Oils With the current popularity of fat-free diets research indicates that many Amer-icans are deficient in Omega-3 oils. These polyunsaturated fats are found in flaxseed oil, hemp oil, and a combination oil called Udo’s oil and are essential for proper glandular, nerve, and muscle function. They have also been found to be deficient in patients with agoraphobia. In one study patients who had been suffering from agoraphobia for ten or more years took 2-6 tablespoons/day of flaxseed oil for 2 to 3 months. Their symptoms significantly improved by 67% as well ridding the patients of other symptoms such as dandruff, dry skin, eczema, and dry and brittle nails. Nutritional Supplements Since the above benzodiazapine drugs work to enhance the nerve transmitter, GABA (gamma amino butyric acid), which in turn blocks the arousal of brain centers, why not supplement with GABA directly? GABA by Twin Labs, 750 mg twice daily can work along with the following amino acids: L-Taurine, 500 mg, 3 times per day on an empty stomach and L-Tyrosine, 500 mg, 3 times per day on an empty stomach. Other supplements, which may be useful in treating anxiety are CoQ10, 100mg/day and vitamin ( B5), Pantothenic Acid by Ecological Formulas, 150-300 mg/day. A good multivitamin is also recommended with 99 mg of potassium/day and additional B-complex formula containing 100-150 mg of B1 and B6. Also, for muscle relaxation and bone health, 2000 mg of calcium/day and 600-1200 mg of magnesium/day is recommended. Homeopathic Combinations If I were to recommend only one product to treat mild to moderate anxiety symptoms and panic attacks, it would be Anti-Anxiety by Enzymatic Therapy, 1-800-783-2286. Although not the best-tasting product, 10-20 of the liquid homeopathic drops taken as needed throughout the day in grape, fruit-flavored juice or water, works wonders. I have gotten thank you letters written to me from folks who have had excellent results from it. It, alone, stopped many of my own panic attacks dead in their tracks by sipping on it slowing and employing deep breathing and relaxation techniques. It is also excellent for asthma attacks, which are most often caused by intense feelings of fear as well. Anti-anxiety used instead of cortisone sprays in conjunction with 1000 mg of MSM is very beneficial in helping asthma. Also, I carried with me a vial of the Bach Flower Essence combination, Rescue Remedy, and took it for about a year, every time I found myself in a mildly stressful situation at work, in traffic, or at the office. It did not cause any drowsiness, caused me to feel centered, and is also a great remedy for those emotional swings, which accompany PMS. Healing the Mind Anxiety or panic attacks are caused psychologically from some type of fear. By getting to the core of the fear that plagues you, mentally analyzing yourself and the situation at hand, and doing the following exercises, I was helped immensely in overcoming my fears. Replacing overwhelming fear with self-love and understanding was the key to healing my own condition. Every time I felt I was starting to get an anxiety attack, I would retreat to a safe and relaxing surrounding-a bedroom, bathroom…anywhere peaceful. I would sip my anti-anxiety remedy slowly and calm the center of my chest by circling my palm there. Meanwhile, I tried to mentally identify the fear I was experiencing. Please note: worry, doubt, and anger or any negative emotion was classified by me as a fear. Once mentally identified, I pictured a doorway in the front of the fear and simply said, “You do not exist”. I then mentally walked through the fear and closed the doorway behind me, while continuing to calm myself. This worked for me in every instance. Hypnosis is also a very good method of treating anxiety disorders. I have used it very successfully with clients who have very specific fears i.e. fear of heights, fear of pain (going to the dentist), fear of suffocating (also the cause of some cases of asthma), fear of elevators, fear of airplanes, fear of crowds, and fear of parades and balloons, etc. I have found that intense fears are often caused by major present, as well as past life traumas. Identifying them and clearing them are keys in understanding ourselves and in healing ourselves. Insomnia and Depression I will discuss depression further next week as a separate topic, although I am well aware that anxiety and depression are treated hand in hand by modern allopathic physicians. Many times drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft, which are used to treat depression, actually cause anxiety and panic attacks as side effects. Therefore anti-anxiety drugs are prescribed along with them. It is sometimes difficult to discern which problem is the primary problem, but I recommend trying to figure out which is the main concern, before mixing drugs or treatment programs together. Insomnia is sometimes a side effect of panic and anxiety disorders. Relax-o-zyme is a mild herbal combination by Enzymatic Therapy, which does not seem to give me a tired, hangover effect as some over-the-counter sleep aids. It contains a mixture of valerian root, skullcap, hops, passionflower and chamomile, all known herbal relaxation aids. Melatonin is a hormone, which is used as a natural sleep remedy and also aids in cases of jet lag. 3 mg. is the normal dosage. A slow release formula is recommended if one gets up many times during the night. A milder, .5 or 1 mg dose can be used by people with small body types, those who are very sensitive to substances, or those who are only experiencing a mild sleep problem. I do not highly recommend melatonin, in general, only because it is a hormone, and by taking it may upset the delicate hormonal balance of the body. Many, though, swear by its beneficial effects and take as much as 9 mg/day. Grief may be a major reason why one is experiencing insomnia. The Bach Flower essence Walnut, 1-2 drops under the tongue, as needed, will help one to process grief and help the client to move forward in their lives. Also the homeopathic remedy, Ignatia, 30c, 4-6 pellets, 3x/day, will aid the person in overcoming grief. Again, Relax-o-zyme and warm milk can be taken before bedtime to aid in falling asleep. Spiritually Speaking By using any number of meditation or prayer techniques, one can calm the mind and spirit. Meditation is a technique whereby you intentionally calm the chattering thoughts in your brain, while prayer is sending desires, thoughts or messages into the spiritual realm. No special position, trick or technique is needed to accomplish either...do only what is comforting and relaxing to you. A specific Bach flower essence to aid in getting rid of persistent, repeating, unwanted thoughts is Sweet Chestnut. Other Bach flower essences that may be of assistance to you could be Rock Rose, for a frozen, helpless state of terror and panic, Aspen, for fear of the unknown, and Mimulus, for fear of known things. Usually 1-2 drops under the tongue before bed, as long as needed, will remedy the situation and allow the person to process the emotional problem in the their dream time. Reiki is a form of hands-on healing which may be used to infuse positive spiritual energy into the body and produce a state of inner tranquility and calmness. Try to find a certified Reiki practitioner in your area and have a session. You will feel relaxed and refreshed after the treatment. Reflections: -BonnieJ.Ryan After more than 30 years as a nurse and a hospice administrator, I am now
teaching elementary school. What a privilege it is to have spent my youth
caring for the elderly and now to be working with children. I love the
poetic balance and the sense of coming around full circle. As I "teach" the
children I am awed by the gift of reciprocal learning, the mutual giving and
receiving that occurs in the teacher/student relationship. I remember my own
teachers...the school teachers and many others who taught me so much about
life. Most of my teachers will never know the effect they had on my life. From “A Treasury of Albert Schweitzer” edited by Thomas Kiernan: “I always think that we live, spiritually, by what others have given us in the significant hours of our life. These significant hours do not announce themselves as coming, but arrive unexpected. Nor do they make a great show of themselves; they pass almost unperceived. Often their significance comes home to us as we look back… Much that has become our own in gentleness, modesty, kindness, willingness to forgive, in veracity, loyalty, resignation under suffering, we owe to people in whom we have seen or experienced these virtues at work… A thought which had become act sprang into us like a spark, and lighted a new flame within us I do not believe that we can put into anyone ideas which are not in him already. As a rule there are in everyone all sorts of ideas, ready like tinder. But much of this tinder catches fire, or catches fire successfully, only when it meets some flame from outside, i.e. from some other person. Often, too, our own light goes out, and is rekindled by some experience we go through with a fellow man. Thus we each have cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flames within us.” Be really nice to your friends because you never know when you are going to need them to empty your bed pan and hold your hand.
