Voters will be going to the polls tomorrow to decide the complexion of the Burnettown Town Council.

November 07, 2005

The mayoral race features four candidates, including incumbent Mayor Wayne Benson, who is seeking reelection, and three other candidates who are seeking the seat, including Councilman Wayne New, C.H. Williams and Billy Reardon.

"I hope we have a large voter turnout on Election Day," said Benson. "It's great when the entire community gets involved, and hopefully, everyone will use reason over rumor when casting their vote. When people cast their ballots Tuesday they'll be making a decision on whether or not to go forward or backwards."

The mayoral race is being closely watched and the candidates vying for the seat will play a significant role in shaping the municipality's future.

"I'm hopeful that we'll have a good voter turnout, and I think that will play an important part in deciding the election," said Williams. "I hope the citizens will come out and vote and lets us know what direction they want us to go. The people have to tell us what they want. I'm running for mayor, so the people will have a voice."

There are six candidates for the two town council seats.

The candidates include Councilman James McIntosh, who is seeking reelection, Chuck Mason, David Wise, Earl Couch, Karen Long and Sharon Gagnon.

"It's important that all of our citizens get out and vote," said New. "It's also important that once a candidate is elected that our constituents continue to support those particular candidates they voted for. This is the most important election Burnettown has ever had."

The Business License Ordinance referendum will not be on the ballot because the town intends to initiate legal action for a declaratory judgement to determine whether or not the petition is legal.

Mayor Steve Carver will face Councilman Mike Miller in the Wagener Mayoral race. Councilmen John Hudson and George Smith are also seeking reelection to four year terms, and will be running unopposed.

The polls open at Burnettown's Town Hall tomorrow at 7 a.m., and will close at 7 p.m.
