BURNETTOWN -- Burnettown's Town
Council addressed a number of items at its meeting Monday evening,
besides the Business License Ordinance.
The 11th Annual Horse Creek/Midland Valley Sassafras Festival proved
to be a success, said Robert Workman, Burnettown Town councilman, who
also sits on the Sassafras Festival Committee.
"We've received a lot of positive feedback about the festival,"
Workman said. "I think Ms. (Karen) Long did a wonderful job with all
of the responsibilities she had."
The festival drew praise from town council, and the municipality hopes
to build on the event's success from this year, even though, there
were two arrests made in the vicinity of the Sassafras Festival.
"We talked with citizens, and they expressed their concerns," Mayor
Wayne Benson said. "We encourage everyone's input. The shuttle buses
taking people to and from the festival from Willie Whaley Park was
very successful. We encourage people to be on the committee, which
will start meeting again in January."
Safety issues regarding the festival were also addressed, as road
closure signs were moved during the event, said C.H. Williams, mayoral
candidate.
"There should be someone directing traffic at the festival," Williams
said. "It's very unsafe."
Horse Creek Merchants Association president Mel Minitor noted that a
physically challenged child's bike was damaged during the festival and
that a child's stroller that was being pushed with a child inside was
hit by a vehicle during the festivities.
"The festival could've been much more orderly," Minitor said.
The money generated by the festival will be put back into the coffers
of the event, so they can be applied to next year's Sassafras Festival
for signs and entertainment, Benson said.
"It's a challenge for the committee to be everywhere at the same time,
and the community serves as our eyes and ears," Workman said. "As the
day goes on, the task gets more difficult."
The lighting of Sassafras Park behind Town Hall is scheduled for Nov.
19 at 6 p.m. Santa Claus will be part of the festivities. The Midland
Valley Chamber Christmas Parade is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 3 p.m.,
Benson said.
There will be three seats contested on the Burnettown Town Council in
the Nov. 8, general election. The candidates for the mayoral race are
Wayne Benson, Wayne New, Billy Rearden and C.H. Williams. Candidates
seeking council seats include James McIntosh, Karen Long, David Wise,
Chuck Mason, Earl Couch and Sharon Gagon.
